Chin Augmentation

What is Chin Augmentation?

Chin augmentation using surgical implants can alter the underlying structure of the face, providing better balance to the facial features. This operation is often, but not always, performed at the time of rhinoplasty to help balance the facial proportions. Chin augmentation may be achieved by manipulation of the jaw bone (mandible), the use of prosthetic implants (made out of silicone) or by dermal filler injections (noninvasive but a temporary treatment).

Are You A Candidate for Chin Augmentation?

During your visit with Dr. Tamim, he will evaluate you and come up with the right treatment plan that fits your needs. Ideal candidates for chin augmentation would be a person who has a less prominent chin either genetically, through an injury, or with aging. Or simply someone who wants more defined and aesthetic profile.

Surgical Technique

Chin implants surgery is done under IV sedation/general anesthesia in one of our operating rooms. It is generally done through a small incision either inside the mouth, in the lower gums or a skin incision underneath the chin. A pocket is then created above the jaw bone and the implant is secured with tight suture closure. Then skin closure is done with resorbable sutures.

What to Expect

Detailed post-operative instructions will be provided to you to ensure proper healing. Most patients see immediate results after chin augmentation. And in general, recovery time is around 1-2 weeks for chin implants. During that time, you will experience some swelling, soreness, bruising, and skin tightness. You will have to avoid strenuous activities in the first 2 weeks. You are expected to see your optimal results in about one month following surgery.
